Captain’s Pick

Background

Deva Racing is pleased to offer shares for sale in the very exciting Ocovango gelding Captain’s Pick, a recent recruit from Ireland who has joined leading NH trainer Christian Williams in South Wales. A five-year-old gelding with plenty of size about him, Captain’s Pick is out of the Oscar mare Knockieran, who was a smart four-time hurdles winner in Ireland. The sire Ocovango enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2022/23, siring the Gr.1 Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle winner Champ Kiely and the Coral Cup winner Langer Dan. It is also worth noting that he has a fine record when paired with Oscar mares, the nick having already resulted in useful performers such as My Reprieve and Unanswered Prayers.

Form

Captain’s Pick has run in three bumpers to date and he began his Deva Racing career in his last start at Worcester, finishing 5th on ground that proved too quick for him, having caught the eye with the way he travelled the last day, jockey Jack Tudor felt that he didn’t let himself down when the pace quickened and ultimately felt he’s be much better suited to an easier surface. Trainer Christian Williams has stated on numerous occasions that he’s impressed with the five-year-old’s ease at doing things at home and it’s not out of the question that we may look to run him in the Cheltenham Listed Bumper in November to continue his education. Additionally, Captain’s Pick form in Ireland is really starting to stack up against some very good NH horses, his ¾ length 2nd behind Minella Mate at Kilbeggan now an interesting bit of form, the latter having finished in front of classy operators Pied Piper & Seddon in a flat race Killarney.
