Background

Shares are available with Deva Racing in the four-year-old Galileo gelding Star Legend, an exciting prospect for handicap hurdles. Star Legend is a beautifully related individual, who hinted at potential in four runs on the flat for William Haggas. A 450,000gns purchase as a yearling, his dam Thai Haku won in Listed company in France and was Group 2 placed in the UAE, before being exported to the US where she won a minor black-type race at Gulfstream and was Group 3 placed at Belmont. Star Legend ran four times on the Flat for William Haggas last year, finishing 5th in his last start at Wolverhampton off a mark of 77 over 1m4f.

Form

After a break and switch to the yard of James Owen, he made his hurdling debut at Uttoxeter in mid-July. Sent off a well-backed 7/2 shot under Harry Cobden, Star Legend travelled strongly in the slipstream of the leader and looked the likely winner when taking over in front three out. The lack of a recent run and his early exuberance took their toll in the closing stages, and he ultimately faded into third, a run full of promise of his first start under rules. Subsequent runs have yielded form figures of 3/7/3/4 & we’re yet to get to the bottom of our son of Galileo. Star Legend’s best run came at Southwell on 7th September over 2m; our 4yo bay gelding travelled like a dream under amateur jockey Alex Chadwick, and he looked to have ‘Ez Tiger’ covered turning for home but he was eventually outfought coming over the last hurdle by both Ez Tiger & winner ‘Baikal’. It’s still early days for Star Legend and he should be getting his head in front sooner rather than later off a mark of 98 for in-form trainer James Owen.
