Background

Shares are available with Deva Racing in the hugely promising four-year-old gelding Shengai Enki, who has shaped with plenty of encouragement in bumpers in recent months when trained in Ireland. By Big Buck’s’ brilliant stallion brother Buck’s Boum, sire of dual Gold Cup hero Al Boum Photo, Shengai Enki is out of the Listed-placed Sri Pekan mare Lady Needles and is a sibling of the black-type-placed French jumper Pao Enki. Shengai Enki was bought by Deva Racing’s Ryan Tongue and Dr Newland at the Goffs UK Spring HIT/PTP Sale after good performances in bumpers, namely when finishing midfield in a warm bumper at the Punchestown Festival, a race which usually throws up lots of subsequent winners.

Form

Our striking son of Buck’s Boum has raced three times over hurdles for his new trainer, progressing with each run over the summer. Starting off in a maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter over 2m, he faded out of contention over the last 3 obstacles after racing a little too keenly and perhaps needing the run. He headed to Worcester on his next start and put his education to good use, travelling more economically under rider Cillian Leonard he kept on well up the straight to pip ally ‘Star Legend’ to a 2nd place finish. ‘Enki’ headed to Fontwell for his 3rd start for new connections in a Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle over 2m5½f, travelling like a dream throughout under jockey Luke Scott, Shengai Enki looked like he was about to break his maiden tag, unfortunately the Emma Lavelle trained ‘Rebel Intentions’ got the better of Enki up the run in, the latter having run well to finish 2nd in a 0-105 Handicap at Plumpton. It was a race full of promise for our 4yo who hadn’t seen a racetrack before the start of the year; we’ve now given him a break and we should expect to see Enki back in action before the end of the year over an intermediate trip.
