Khangai

Khangai, a five-year-old gelding by Twilight Son, has been a fantastic servant since joining the Newmarket stable of James Owen and has three victories to his name in our Deva Racing silks.

A half-brother to the US minor stakes winner Simmy’s Temple and a 135,000gns purchase at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale at the start of his career, Khangai was sparingly raced as a two-year-old before being gelded ahead of his three-year-old campaign.

He made steady progress in the spring and summer of 2023, winning a 1m2f Chepstow handicap from a mark of 57 and placing on several other occasions. There were flickers of that form from Khangai at the start of his 2024 campaign, but an overall deterioration meant that he joined the James Owen stable with a basement mark of 49 on both turf and the all-weather.

Such figures clearly underestimate his ability, and he was recruited with the intention of targeting the all-weather winter bonus, whereby a horse can earn points for every top-five finish at an all-weather track between 22nd October and 18th April. The scheme features monthly prizes of up to £20,000, and the overall winner receives a cheque for £100,000!

Khangai made his debut for us at Wolverhampton over 1m1½f in late October and produced an encouraging midfield finish. Stepped up to 1m4f at Southwell shortly afterwards, he recovered from a bump at the start to win going away. Raised to a mark of 51 following that victory, he was placed on his next two starts before earning his second win in Deva silks over 1m4f at Wolverhampton in mid-December. The second, third and tenth from that race have all won since, underlining that it was a tremendous piece of form for the grade.

Another near-miss followed at Southwell over 1m6f before the end of the year, but Khangai was back in the winner’s enclosure on his first start of 2025 when reacting favourably to a first-time visor and winning a competitive 1m4f handicap at Southwell on the 3rd of January.

Khangai already has a very healthy points table in the winter all-weather series (57 at the time of writing), and his habit of winning narrowly means his new rating of 57 looks well within reach. Hopefully this tough and versatile horse can add to his tally before the winter campaign is out.
