Five Bar Brian

Shares are available in the extremely exciting six-year-old Elusive Pimpernel gelding Five Bar Brian. He has already shown smart form in bumpers and is likely to rank highly amongst the 2020/21 crop of novice hurdlers.

He is out of the unraced Highest Honor mare Vayenga, so is therefore a sibling of the prolific flat winner Tigers Tale, who was good enough to attain a peak official rating of 101. The dam hails from a family of genuine quality, and other near relations include the Grp-1 winners Valanour, Vereva, Yashgan and Vayrann.

Vayenga’s sire Highest Honor might have passed away more than a decade ago, but it is only in recent seasons that his aptitude as a NH broodmare sire has been truly appreciated. High-class performers over jumps that his daughters have produced include the dual Grade-1 winning juvenile hurdler Petite Parisienne, Dan Skelton’s Grade-1 placed novice chaser Nube Negra, the Triumph Hurdle runner-up Kentucky Hyden and the classy hurdler/chaser Burbank.

With such a strong pedigree it was no surprise to see Five Bar Brian go close in a junior bumper at Newcastle in December 2017 on his racecourse debut. Held up towards the rear, he really caught the eye when finishing strongly into second. Unfortunately, a promising debut was followed by more than two years on the sidelines.

By the time Five Bar Brian reappeared in January of this year he had been transferred to the care of Willie Mullins. He made his comeback in a highly competitive Fairyhouse bumper, and once again waiting tactics were employed.

Five Bar Brian really impressed with the way he travelled into contention under Patrick Mullins, asserting over a furlong out, and then had more than enough in reserve to repel all challengers in gruelling conditions late on. Since then, the form of the Fairyhouse win is working out very well and looks extremely solid.

That victory earned Five Bar Brian a tilt at the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival in March, and he produced yet another taking performance in the most competitive race of its type of the season. Although ultimately tiring into the midfield, he had looked one of the most likely winners when travelling strongly around three-furlongs from home. He made good headway on the worst ground which was on the inside part of the course that was very badly cut up due to heavy rain all afternoon. This run  suggested he could be a huge talent!

Five Bar Brian is a big imposing sort who will keep improving in time and will make into a very exciting chaser so a big future is ahead of him.

Five Bar Brian’s sire Elusive Pimpernel has produced a plethora of high-class hurdlers in the recent past, such as Coeur Sublime, Ex Patriot and Soviet Pimpernel. Five Bar Brian looks likely to be another one to add to that growing list.
