Fiesole

Fiesole, an eight-year-old son of the great Montjeu, Fiesole hails from a very smart family. He is a sibling of the Listed-placed filly Remember, whilst their dam was a half-sister to the Grp-1 winning mare Zomaradah – now better known as the dam of Dubawi. The next generation of the pedigree features the 1998 Derby winner High Rise.

With such blue-blooded credentials, it is little surprise that Fiesole went through the ring during Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale with a 575,000gns reserve. He ultimately went into training with Luca Cumani, for whom he showed promise in a pair of starts as a two-year-old and then won a mile and a quarter handicap at Brighton at three.

He was sold to Ireland soon after to embark on a hurdling career, and proved his proficiency over obstacles with a pair of victories at Down Royal in May 2017. He also progressed to new heights on the flat that season, winning middle distance handicaps at Limerick and Gowran and improving his rating to a career-high mark on the level of 90.

Fiesole was to win twice more in Ireland for Eoin Doyle in 2018 (one flat, one jumps) before transferring back across the Irish Sea and into the care of OIly Murphy later that year.

He began his career for Olly from a mark of 133 in the valuable Betfair Exchange Trophy at Ascot, and just took a run or two to find his best form again. However, following a little bit of leniency from the handicapper, he confirmed that all of his ability remained intact when romping to a nine-length success in a two-mile handicap hurdle at Plumpton in April of last year.

On his very next start Fiesole produced a career-best to finish a 2.25l fourth in the valuable and prestigious Grade-3 Swinton Handicap Hurdle at Haydock – a run which saw his rating increase to a career-high figure over jumps of 139.

In the months that followed Fiesole ran with credit in a series of flat handicaps, and has more recently been given a break to avoid the worst of the winter ground and freshen him up for his 2020 campaign. He is currently rated 81 on the flat (6lb below his highest winning mark) and 136 over hurdles – the same mark from which he produced his superb Swinton run last summer.

Fiesole has won eight times and earned over £100,000 in his career to date, and given that he showed his best ever form last summer, there is every reason to expect more of the same in the future. He will not be long in winning again and targets such as a repeat tilt at the Swinton Hurdle are sure to be on his agenda.
