Based with the increasingly powerful Olly Murphy in Warwickshire, Jan Wellens look like a surefire future winner for Deva Racing.
A three-year-old gelding by Dutch Art and out of a full-sister to a Grp-1 winner, he got off the mark for previous connections in a mile–and–a–quarter Roscommon handicap in June. On that occasion he showed a fine attitude to get the better of a protracted battle with the runner-up, and it was clear that a step–up in distance had allowed him to improve upon his previous form.
After just six starts on the level Jan Wellens was sourced by Deva to go hurdling, and he has already made steps towards what will hopefully be a successful career over jumps.
He made his debut over sticks at Perth in September, finishing fifth, and has since run twice more to earn an opening handicap mark of 98. There is no doubt that he will benefit enormously from these initial experiences, and his opening rating surely significantly underestimates his ability and potential. He looks just the sort to run up a sequence of wins for his shrewd trainer, particularly once he has had time tobrush up on his hurdling technique. Jan Wellens remains a horse to look forward to.
