The tough and genuine five-year-old Dylan Thomas gelding Captain Tom Cat has really thrust the Deva Racing name in lights this season, with some sterling performances live in front of the ITV cameras at Cheltenham!
Trained by Grand National winner Dr Richard Newland, Captain Tom Cat showed some promise in the point-to-point field but has nonetheless improved out of all recognition since racing under rules in recent months.
He was second in a Southwell novice hurdle on his debut in July, before cruising to a seven-length success at Uttoxeter just over a fortnight later. With the form of that win working out well, it was little surprise that Captain Tom Cat defied a penalty to score again at Uttoxeter on his next start in August.
Completing the hat-trick would be harder, but Captain Tom Cat took a rise in the weights and step–up to two-miles–and–five-furlongs in his stride. On the Friday of the high–profile Showcase meeting at Cheltenham in October, he cruised around the track under Cillin Leonard, before powering away from his rivals approaching the last to record an authoritative two lengths success.
Captain Tom Cat returned to Cheltenham the following month from a six-pound higher mark, and on this occasion finished an honourable third. It was another excellent performance, on by far the softest ground he had encountered under rules, and there remains the promise of plenty more to come.
