The Winners Keep Flowing
by Ryan Tongue

We have started the new National Hunt season the same way finished the last – with winners!

High Change got his Deva Racing career of to the best possible start, when he ran out a comprehensive winner of a competitive Handicap Hurdle that was shown live, on ITV Racing. Dr Richard Newland had been full of confidence in the lead up to the race and his well-regarded judgement was confirmed to be correct.

Under an astute ride from one of Deva Racing’s most successful jockeys (Sam Twiston-Davis), High Change was settled near the back before creeping into contention in the latter half of the race. Racing towards the last, your eyes were drawn towards the blue and red silks that were going ominously well and a good jump at the last settled proceedings. He is just the type of horse that the good Dr excels with and it would be no surprise if he were to end up in a valuable handicap, at the end of the summer.

Just two days later, we were delt with our first Saturday winner of the campaign.

Grange Road made the mammoth journey from Somerset all the way up to Northumberland worthwhile, when running away with the Maiden Hurdle and in the process made one of his ‘excitable’ owners a social media sensation!

The well-bred son of Oscar has had an interrupted season, through no fault of his own and it was looking as though time was running out for him to reach the racecourse. Thankfully, the weather God’s played ball and the recent wet weather ensured that he was able to show his ability to the public. Under a typically polished ride from Daryl Jacob, he always looked the winner and as he crossed the line, it was an ever widening 7 lengths back to his nearest pursuer.

He looks an out and out staying chaser who will relish soft ground therefore, he will have a break over the summer months before being aimed at some nice staying races in the winter.
