Captain Tom Cat once again posted a performance to be proud of, when finishing third at Cheltenham on Saturday, in the hands of Deva Racing’s sponsored jockey – Cillin Leonard.
Dr Richard Newland’s charge has been a flagbearer for the Deva Racing team so far this season, and on Saturday he flew the flag high once again. The heavy rain that had landed over Cheltenham racecourse over the 48 hours previously, caused many worries, with all his performances so far being achieved on good ground. But the son of Dylan Thomas, showed he had an extra string to his bow, when battling on bravely to finish third in what was a highly competitive handicap hurdle on testing going.
Although the rain may have blunted his high cruising speed, with Cillin having to anchor him more than is necessary on better ground, he jumped brilliantly and battled on tenaciously up the stiff Cheltenham hill. Once again walking into the famed Cheltenham winner’s enclosure.
Nevertheless, Dr Newland feels that he will be seen to best effect when racing on a flat track and will be at his optimum on slightly better ground. This has led to him have chosen the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton Park, in January as his main aim. The track and trip should suit him perfectly and if the ground were to be on the better side, which it tends to be at Kempton, then he could run a mighty race.
