Tomorrow is a very exciting day here at Deva Racing. Captain Tom Cat looks to win his fourth race in a row and second in under a month at the home of National Hunt racing – Cheltenham. Dr Richard Newland’s charge has done nothing but impress throughout the campaign so far but faces his toughest assignment to date when lining up in the ‘Paddy Power Intermediate Handicap Hurdle’ at 3.25.
The competition includes unexposed types from big yards such as Nicky Henderson, Kim Bailey and David Pipe among others and Captain Tom Cat will have to have improved to be going home with all the scalps. Nonetheless, the hopes are high that he has. He is only a young horse, with his last race being his first race in a handicap and he will have learnt a lot from that experience. On top of that, all the reports coming out of the Dr Newland camp are positive.
The handicapper has put him up 6lb for his latest victory over course and distance, but we are hopeful that the extra weight will not stop him yet. The manner in which he travelled through the race last time and passed over the line with his ears prick, indicated that he was a very well handicapped horse.
The ground will be a concern as Cheltenham do expect a lot of rain through the morning. Whether he will like the ground, we don’t know. We will learn a lot from tomorrow.
The talented Cillin Leonard will once again ride and let’s hope that together Cillin and Captain Tom Cat can bring a smile back to everyone’s faces, after what has been a turbulent few weeks.
